Case Study. Custom-manufactured terminal to reduce fiber pulling costs

BendTel needed a custom fiber splitter to reduce the amount of fiber footage required for its latest broadband project in Oregon. Not just to save on initial installation costs, but also to reduce labor costs associated with any future repairs or upgrades to the network. Atlantic Vision took on the custom challenge.

BendTel is a broadband service provider in the Bend, Oregon area. It offers customers multi-Gigabit fiber networks, voice service options, and hosted phone systems.

The Challenge

“We were looking for a manufacturer who could customize a multiport service terminal (MST) for us. We knew the large suppliers wouldn’t even care to look at our custom order,” says BendTel installer Tim Howe. “So we turned to Atlantic Vision to make sense of what we needed in a fiber cable splitter terminal.”

The MST that Atlantic Vision manufactured is now the LightBoost MST, the first on the market that’s customizable and open platform. “The MST had to be 100 percent waterproof, be rugged, but also come in a small form to save on materials cost. We couldn’t risk having a low-quality MST because any savings in the short term would be quickly negated by future repairs.”

Results
Atlantic Vision manufactured and shipped the new MST in just three weeks. The LightBoost Terminal’s open platform design can work on any future or existing infrastructure.

Lower cost
The optimized fiber deployment reduced pre-built cable footage by 30%, eliminating overlap and lowering material costs. Additional savings came from reduced lashing wire, labor, and build time.

Easier maintenance
A streamlined cable layout simplifies repairs, requiring fewer trips for splicing and minimizing the need for stocking multiple cable sizes.

Faster deployment
Pre-connectorized hubs enabled quicker installations, cutting down deployment time and accelerating network readiness.

Maximized efficiency
The design ensures more effective use of OLT (optical line termination) ports, delivering greater capacity and performance for the same investment.
